Nice change up: New painting, Paris
Branching out, exploring further my style as I start my second full year of painting.
2018 was an exciting first full year of painting for many years. I have started 2019 going a bit further afield with my subject matter. My second painting of the year, “Across the Street”, is inspired by a personal daytime photo I transformed into a night scene with a streetlight illuminating the elegant Haussmannien façade opposite. This is a snip-it of the original painting. A full view of the painting can be found on my website under "Gallery/ Fresh off the easel".
First oil painting of 2019!
Exciting new start of the New Year with a new painting fresh off the easel.
The oil painting is 73x60cm oils on linen. It is based on a photo I took of my daughter’s beloved dog Gilly who we lost last year to illness. She loved to swim in the pool. I was not even finished with the painting and my daughter already had a claim on it. Looking forward to an exciting New Year at the easel! This is a snip-it of the original painting. A full view of the painting can be found on my website under "Gallery/ Fresh off the easel".
Wishing all a wonderful creative 2019!
Looking forward to an exciting New Year and wishing all a wonderful creative 2019!
Welcoming in the 2019 New Year with excitement following the completion of my first full year painting in 2018. It has been an exciting journey to date after a 30-year professional career: the buildout of my website, completing 14 paintings Including a commission, 2 expositions and becoming a registered artist in France.
While I have not blogged since mid-November, I have been very busy participating at the Animal Art Paris Exposition (Nov 2018), organizing school events at my daughter’s school, schooling the horses, and taking care of my family including our 10-month old puppy. That being said....I have found time to be in the atelier and two new exciting paintings are due out within the week. Stay Tuned!
Looking forward to an exciting New Year and wishing all a wonderful creative 2019!

Two new paintings ready for Animal Art Paris 2018
Two new paintings making their debut at Animal Art Paris Exposition-Vente (16-18 Nov 2018)
Snip-it of two paintings, “Sunrise Splashes” and “Airborne” just finished. Sunrise Splashes is like Frozen Puddles, a play of backlight setting the horses in shadows. It is a depiction of morning workout for the horses at the La Baule Spring horse show. “Airborne” was originally painted in March 2018 featuring Ayade de Septon* HDC. It was originally intended to be more of an artsy format but I felt it was better served in a format more of my style of painting fully the horse and using light and color to bring out the power of the jump. A full view of these paintings can be found on my website under "Gallery/ Fresh off the easel" and will also be at the Animal Art Paris Exposition-Vente,L’Hippodrome d’Auteuil (16-18 Nov).v
“Blue Coat” is finished
Snip-it of new painting just finished and will be at the Animal Art Paris Exposition (16-18 Nov 2018).
Snip-it of new painting just finished. Following on from the last painting, “Determination”, I wanted to do another zoom with dressage in mind. The light source and angle created an interesting perspective. The new painting will be at the Animal Art Paris Salon International at Hippodrome d’Auteuil 16-18 Nov 2018. A full view of the painting can be found on my website under "Gallery/ Fresh off the easel".

“Determination” painting is finished
Snip-it of new painting just finished. It will be on display at the CSI Barbizon horse show at Ecuries Bost (28-30 Sept 2018) and at the Salon Animal Art (Paris, 16-18 Nov).
Snip-it of new painting just finished. A fun change from a fuller horse presentation. I started the painting at the Gallery 39 Exposition 30 Aug-5 Sept, Barbizon. The gallery was large enough that I could display my artwork while painting a new creation. The visitors to the gallery enjoyed seeing my fellow artist (Jo Charlton) and myself actually working on site. The new painting will be on display at the CSI Barbizon horse show 28-30 Sept 2018 at Ecuries Bost, Barbizon and also at the Animal Art Paris Salon International at Hippodrome d’Auteuil 16-18 Nov 2018. A full view of the painting can be found on my website under "Gallery/ Fresh off the easel".
“Lake Titicaca” painting is finished
Snip-it of next painting just finished. It will be on display at the Barbizon Exposition later this week. 50x50cm oils on linen.
Here is a snip-it of my next oil painting just finished, “Lake Titicaca”, based on photo taken by a friend who travelled there over the summer. I could not resist painting with these colors. It will be on show at the exposition at Galerie 39 located in Barbizon from 30 Aug – 5 Sept 2018. Full view of the painting can be found on my website under "Gallery/ Fresh off the easel".
Prints will be available at Barbizon show
Excited to announce that I have recently teamed up with a specialist printer that can transform my original artwork into high quality exhibition prints. An initial selection of prints will be available that the Exposition in Barbizon (30 Aug- 5 Sept 2018).
I just teamed up with a specialized printer to create exhibition quality prints of my original artwork. The print is created from a studio photo of the artwork (to replicate the colors in the original piece while eliminating any glare). It is printed onto high quality paper that delivers high-definition images with an extended tonal range and excellent archival properties. Reprints on canvas will equally be available on request. A selection of my original artwork will be available as prints at the Barbizon Exposition (30 Aug – 5 Sept) with more to come during the Autumn. I will soon update the website for prints that are available for wider purchase.
“La Détente” painting is finished
“La Détente” portrait is finished. A large format 81 x 100cm oils on cotton canvas. Will be on display at the exposition at Galerie 39 in Barbizon from 30 Aug. Hope to see you there!
“La Détente” is a portrait of my daughter who was warming up on location in Fontainebleau in preparation of a horse show earlier this summer. I was sitting there watching and could not resist the idea of a painting. It was a warm sunny summer day under the cool trees at the Fontainebleau showgrounds. It is a large format 81x100 cm painting, oils on cotton canvas which was nice and bouncy…perfect for the capturing the movement and painting a dapple grey! It will be on display at the exposition at Galerie 39 located in Barbizon from 30 Aug – 5 Sept 2018.

“Frozen Puddles” painting finished
A little “artwork” ditty just finished, “Frozen Puddles” inspired by a photo I took one foggy February morning at the stables.
“Frozen Puddles” painting is a quick little “artwork” ditty that I have just completed. It is a change from my other recent pieces. I enjoyed painting with a different set of colors on my palette creating a different atmosphere. It is based on a photo I took one foggy February morning when I arrived at the stables only to catch my younger horse coming back from a Pro jumper schooling: a quiet peaceful scene with the light coming from the background sun trying to burn away the morning fog. Check out the full version posted under “Gallery” on my website.
“Brietling LS” painting finished
Painting of “Breiting LS” just finished. It is inspired by a zoom of photo taken by Shannon Brinkman (http://shannonbrinkman.zenfolio.com)
“Breiting LS” painting is finished: inspired by a zoom of photo taken by Shannon Brinkman (http://shannonbrinkman.zenfolio.com): Breitling LS ridden by Beezie Madden (USA) at the Longines FEI World Cup Finals 2018 Showjumping held in Paris in April 2018. My family was in attendance to watch the spectacular finale which they won! This is photo snip-it of the painting. Check out the full version posted under “Gallery” on my website.
Exposition de la Rentree - Barbizon 30 Aug to 5 Sept 2018
Excited to announce an upcoming exposition with ArtbyJoCharlton to be held in the Barbizon (“Village des Peintres”) from 30 Aug to 5 Sept 2018. Vernissage will be held Saturday 1 Sept, 2018. Hope to see you there!
Very excited to announce an upcoming personal exposition to be held in Barbizon (Village des Peintres) on the border of the forest of Fontainebleau. Barbizon is the village where “Barbizon School of Painters” was created by a group of painters that revolutionized landscape and peasant genre painting between 1830 and 1878. It was an art movement towards Realism. The style prominent elements include the color/tonal qualities, loose brushwork, and softness of form. I am excited to sharing this event with ArtbyJoCharlton! The vernissage will be held on Saturday 1 September, 2018. It will be a special week for me celebrating my two passions: painting and my horses that will 2 minutes away at Ecuries Bost, Barbizon.
Snip-it of developing painting...that may become a painting in own right
A snip-it of new painting that I am working on. I like this snip-it with darker tones as a painting in its own right. Perhaps a spin-off idea of the main painting once finished.
The next painting is advancing. It is a zoom on Breitling ridden by Beezie Madden (USA) at the Longines FEI World Cup Finals 2018 Showjumping held in Paris in April 2018, which they won! My family was in attendance to watch the exciting spectacular finale that Sunday. This is photo snip-it of the painting in progress that I took late in the day lending to the darker tones. It could be a painting in its own right. Perhaps a spin-off idea for another painting to follow.
Debut of "London Calling"
New painting! Mother nature juxtaposed with man’s creation. Powerful colors coupled with peace/calm that sunrise brings…even in the City of London
A wonderful photo by “HistoryLondon” that I found irresistible not to paint. Sunrise over the docklands taken from the City of London. These snip-its are extracts from the painting that is currently drying. The full image of the painting will be soon on my website “Gallery – Fresh off the easel”.
Ruby Wedding Anniversary, portrait
A snip-it of a new portrait painting just finished for upcoming Ruby Wedding Anniversary. See" “Gallery” in my website for full image.
Thrilled to share a new portrait painting recently finished: a present for an upcoming Ruby Wedding anniversary - 40 years! It is currently resting to dry fully before it is prepared for shipment. The full image of the painting is on my website “Gallery – Fresh off the easel”.
Quelques nouveautés
I have been playing around with glazing and have applied that to my the last painting “Miami Sunshine”. It provides an additional element of depth and luminosity by enabling light to pass through top thin layers of paint through to the opaque underlying painting. The new image of the painting is uploaded on my website “Gallery – Fresh off the easel”.
I also decided to jazz up my signature, which was an element of fun playing around ideas with my daughter.
